 Product Description:

Please note that health supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure diseases. Please consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment of your health condition.

In healthy individuals, the urinary tract is sterile, ie. free from bacteria. However, women are very susceptible to ingress of bacteria into the urinary tract. Statistics show that up to 50% of women will experience a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), with up to 25% experiencing a recurrence within the following year.

80% of UTI's are caused by the bacteria E. Coli, which is able to stick to the urothelium, the cells that line the Urinary Tract. There is no doubt that antibiotics are the preferred choice of treatment for the infection. As UTI's are frequently recurrent, however, there are concerns on the overuse of antibiotics, which can result in strains of bacteria becoming increasingly resistant to treatment.

D-mannose is a simple sugar that has a structure similar to that of glucose. This naturally occurring sugar is found in cranberries and pine apples. When consumed, a small percentage is converted by the body into glucose, while the rest is excreted in the urine.

Studies have shown that D-Mannose is able to reduce bacteria's ability to stick to the urothelium. Thus the normal process of urine flowing though the urinary tract will be sufficiant to dislodge bacteria from the urinary tract walls and excrete them as normal.

As D-Mannose does not convert to glycogen and is not stored in liver, so it is considered safe for diabetics. Only a small amount of this simple sugar is metabolized and the excess is excreted in urine. However, it is still important that people suffering from diabetes should consult their doctor prior to taking this supplement.

There have been many peer-reviewed scientific studies done on D-mannose and UTI's. You can read them by clicking on the links below. As they contain a lot of medical terms, you can always ask you doctor to help you to explain the conclusions. Please note that "Prophylaxis" means "treatment"
