Resveratrol is a member of a family plant compounds known as polyphenols. It is primarily found in the skin of grapes, especially the red grapes. The other sources of Resveratrol also include berries and peanuts. 1. Antioxidant


  • Excessive reactive oxidative species (ROS) induces oxidative stress which will induce damage to DNA, proteins and lipids. All these are proposed to be the underlying mechanisms of chronic diseases and aging.
  • In addition, inflammation further induces oxidative stress, all these factors lead to cumulative damages in the body, resulting in chronic diseases.  
  • Most of the chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, and atherosclerosis are all associated with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Resveratrol is capable in reducing both oxidative stress and inflammation, and hence, combating against oxidative damage in DNA, protein and lipids.

2. Anti-inflammatory


  • As chronic inflammation is associated with various chronic diseases, such as atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular events, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. 4. Telomere length maintenance


  • Human telomeres are the protective caps at the end of each DNA strands which is responsible in protecting the chromosomes (a DNA molecule that carries genetic information of individual). During each round of DNA replication (production of identical DNA from a single DNA strand), telomere tends to shorten. The consequences of such process lead to the average telomere length to shorten with increasing age, and hence, leading to limited cell division. When the telomere length is too short or telomeres are dysfunction, the cells can no longer replicate, known as “replicative senescence”. This leads to the cells unable to grow or function normally, and hence, resulting in organs to be more susceptible to diseases as one age.
  • Also, telomeres shortening increases the susceptibility of DNA damage induced by stressors such as UV rays and oxidative damages, this eventually results in cell dysfunctioning and cell death. 
  • Telomere shortening is accelerated by inflammation and oxidative stress in which accelerated telomere shortening is associated with aging, age-related chronic diseases as well as reduced longevity.
  • LTL (leukocyte telomere length) is an indicator of human lifespan whereby the longer the LTL, the longer lifespan of an individual. Resveratrol potentially attenuates telomere shortening by scavenging (neutralize) against reactive oxidative species (ROS) generation in human cells, which in turn, could help to delay rate of cellular replicative senescence as well as increase in DNA repair enzyme.

Health Benefits evidenced by Human Studies


1. Diabetes


  • Resveratrol improves glycemic control in type 2 diabetes as it improves insulin sensitivity by enhancing pancreas’ function, hence enables the cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream more efficiently.
  • Human clinical trial demonstrated that twice daily 5 mg of resveratrol consumption is capable of lowering fasting blood glucose levels, and delayed glucose peak in men with type 2 diabetes in 1 month.
  • Daily 250 mg of resveratrol supplementation significantly improved the mean HBA1c ( average blood glucose concentration over the past 3 months) in 3 months.

2. Cardiovascular health


  • Daily 150 mg of resveratrol effectively reduces systolic blood pressure within 1 month, such effects also observed in people with type 2 diabetes.

4. Chemotherapeutic Agent (Anti-Cancer)


  • Study demonstrated that resveratrol could reduce progression of pre-cancer to cancer stage in women with higher risk of developing breast cancer. This is mainly attributed to activating tumor suppressor gene (RASSF-1a) in the body.  In addition, in patients with colorectal cancer, resveratrol supplementation could potentially reduce rate of cellular proliferation of cancerous tissue by at least 5%.
